nature of political science

Political Science is a part of Social Science. Being a part of Social Sciences, nature of Political Science is different from that of Physical Science. It is a multifaceted discipline that delves into the world of politics and governance. It explores the nature of power, authority, governance and public policy, analyzing how individuals and groups engage in political processes to shape societies and institutions. There has been many debate among the scholars regarding the status of Political Science, whether Political Science is a science or an Art. While some argue it may not be a perfect science due to the complexity of its subject matter, its commitment to systematic inquiry, theory building and evidence-based analysis positions it is a rigorous field for understanding the political world.

On the other hand, the emphasis on practical application, creativity, communication and ethical considerations also aligns with aspects of the Arts. According to Aristotle, a Greek philosopher and polymath “Political Science is the master science through which civilization could be saved”. Political scientists today, employ survey methods, graphs, charts and other scientific tools to arrive at their research conclusions. Political Science is thus a science, though not like the physical sciences such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology etc. An American professor Robert A. Dahl said that “Political Science is both a science and an Art”. Political Science applies systematic methods of inquiry to study political phenomena and behavior.

Now Political Science is closely related to all aspects of social relations, rather than an activity centred on the institutions of government. Political Science doesn’t just focus on a single country. It encourages comparative analysis, examining how political systems function across different nations.

Conclusion:

Political Science occupies a unique space, blending elements of both science and art. It equips individuals with a critical lens to analyze power structures, government policies and citizen participation. While Political Science is traditionally categorized as a social science due to its emphasis on systematic research and theory building, it incorporates aspects of art in its focus on practical application, creativity, communication and ethical considerations.
