Individualism is a philosophical, political and social ideology that emphasizes the moral worth, autonomy and rights of the individual. Individualism is also known as the ‘Laissez Faire’ theory of state activity. In French ‘Laissez Faire’ means ‘Leave the individual alone’. Individualism should be given maximum freedom so that individuals should be free to pursue their own interests, goals and happiness without excessive inference from other or the government. Jeremy Bentham (An English philosopher, jurist and social reformer), John Stuart Mill (An English philosopher and political economist), Immanuel Kant ( A German Philosopher), Herbert Spencer (An English philosopher and psychologist) and Adam Smith (A Scottish economist and philosopher) were the main advocates of the theory of ‘Individualism’.

It does not want the state to perform any welfare function.
